Bubble baths can be a lot of fun for children and the perfect way to relax at the end of a long day for an adult, but, when the average chemical based bubble bath liquid costs $2.50-$10, have you ever wondered what ingredients have been used to make it?
Here’s the bad news…
The most common ingredients used in bubble bath include surfactants, preservatives and synthetic fragrances and colours.
Surfactants are usually made from synthetic materials and are used in industrial detergents, washing powders and bath products. Surfactants may be listed in the ingredients as SLS, SLES, PEG’s, cocoamidopropyl betaine or cocamide DEA. These surfactants can cause skin irritations such as rashes and dermatitis.
Preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, methychloroisothiazolinone and hydroxymethylglycinate have been associated with contact dermatitis and skin and lung irritations.
Chemical fragrances are often added to these products and may cause headaches and contain suspected allergens and neurotoxins.
Synthetic colours are added to bubble baths to make them look pretty, however; many are coal tar derivatives – a petroleum product.
